Spookfontein Restaurant Review (Hermanus)
We were in Hermanus as part of our annual trip over the Easter school holidays. We visited Spookfontein Restaurant on Day 3. It had been all about doing things slowly. We had first had some…
Baard & Co. deliver The Roasted Dad Sourdough!
“Can you make on that says ‘The Roasted Dad’?” I asked tongue-in-cheek.. but low and behold, the next day Ronel de Jager, the power house behind the BAARD & Co brand…
Huizen Living Accommodation Review
Who doesn’t love a sneaky getaway? When Jan Hendrik Oosthuizen from Huizen Living approached me asking if I could assist with creating some recipes to include in the cabins, so that guests would be able to use the well-stocked kitchen to re-create my dishes…
Using a Gas Braai on the Expresso Show
Being on “Your Feel Good Morning Show” isn’t how it looks on TV… Being a guest on Expresso gave me a whole new level of respect for the presenters. Live TV is not easy. You have to be quick on your feet, and be able to multi-task.
A Cook-with-Me Demo in the Bosch Showroom in Cape Town
You can hire the Bosch Showrooms in Cape Town and Johannesburg for Private & Corporate Functions. In order to raise funds for three charities I auctioned off a cook-with-me demo and this is how it went down!
La Colombe announced Best Restaurant in Africa
The World’s 50 Best Restaurants for 2024 have just been announced, and Cape Town’s own La Colombe made it into the top 50. The win took me down memory lane, to my wife’s birthday three years ago, which we celebrated in style at atop the Silvermist Wine Estate.
What it was like to cook live on the Expresso Show
Being on “Your Feel Good Morning Show” isn’t how it looks on TV… Being a guest on Expresso gave me a whole new level of respect for the presenters (Ewan Strydom, Graeme Richards, Ryle Rene de Morny and). Live TV is not easy. You have to be quick on your feet, and be able to multi-task.
LED Lighting SA hosts MasterChef vs Mayor cook-off to raise funds for Charity
As serial entrepreneur and CEO of LED Lighting SA, I like to use the skills learned and connections made through MasterChef for good cause.
When LLSA’s Social Committee organised a braai at the SA Children’s Home in Gardens, South Africa, a little boy ran up to me and grabbed my leg, saying “this is the best day of my life”. This made me want to do more. Because if a little boy’s experienced “the best day of his life” when we made him and his friends some boerewors rolls, what more could we do?
Winning MasterChef… One year later
Today, 31 March marks one year since I was crowned winner of MasterChef South Africa.

The Chefs' Collective Pop-Up at Makers Landing
Less than a month after winning MasterChef SA, I opened a pop-up restaurant together with Chefs Darren Badenhorst and Callan Austin at Makers Landing, the V&A Waterfront. Having made it through many MasterChef challenges, dreaming up a fine dining menu and then executing MasterChef quality (fine dining) dishes to twenty-four guests simultaneously was a new challenge altogether.
Questions Everybody Asks about Being on MasterChef (& My Answers)
Having been part of MasterChef South Africa Season 4, there are some questions that keep recurring when I talk to friends and family members about the experience. I thought I’d share a selection of the questions I get asked most often - with my answers of course!
SA's MasterChef winner on Algoa FM Breakfast Show
The Algoa FM Breakfast Show with Wayne, Lee and Charlie T were adament that even though I have been described as Capetonian in the media, the word needed to get out there, that actually I am Gqeberha-born, even though I am now based in Cape Town.
Get To Know Me, The Roasted Dad
When I initially applied to be a contestant on Masterchef South Africa, season four, I had to fill out a long application form. The questions and answers below are largely derived from that Q&A form.
What You Didn’t See on the First Episode of Masterchef South Africa Season 4
The first episode of MasterChef South Africa Season 4 was broadcast on M-Net last night (read a review here), and I watched the show with some close friends and family members. Everyone brought a pizza of their choice - I wasn’t going to cook this time!
How I became a MasterChef SA Contestant
The news is out! Today, M-Net released a promo video that showed some of the contestants for MasterChef SA 2022, and so I can finally tell you that I was part of the show!
It has been a very difficult secret to keep, and I am so ready to shout it off the rooftops now.
Emazulwini - a Heavenly Experience
With my parents in Cape Town for the festive season, we have the benefit of two great babysitters on-hand and we took full advantage last Friday night.
We had been wanting to go to Emazulwini for a while, and with guests and fellow foodies down from Johannesburg for a long weekend, it was the perfect timing.
Meat Free Mondays…
I had so much fun experimenting with the concept of meat free Mondays. The challenge set myself recently is to create a vegetarian and zero-waste dish at least once a week. This came from the realisation that I am daunted by cooking vegetarian dishes.
Riebeeck Kasteel
After a hectic few weeks my wife and I decided it was time to go for a weekend away. With two small children and a third on the way, it needed to be close enough to Cape Town to be able to drive to for a short two-night stay, yet far away to make it feel like the little get-away we needed.
The Early Beginnings of The Roasted Dad
It all started in the middle of the pandemic. During lockdown, I started to experiment with cooking more, trying out new techniques and buying different ingredients to create nice dishes with. To capture that journey, I opened a new Instagram account. It was in our kitchen, while enjoying a glass of red, that we threw a few name ideas around, until The Roasted Dad was born.
