Oh, who doesn’t love Marie Biscuit Fudge?

A Childhood Favourite, and Bestseller at any Market or Fundraiser…

Nostalgic sweet treats and my childhood are linked to the church bazaar favourite, Marie Biscuit fudge. I grew up making these for church sales, school bake sales and later I even had my first enterprise selling them for R1 a packet to all the local neighbours. To bring back my awesome memories of my first entrepreneurial endeavours we got Aiden setup at our local market! This Marie biscuit fudge recipe is based on my childhood one, with a few tweaks I made ahead of the market.

Aiden and I made the Marie biscuit fudge together while Liv and Harvey were napping, but ultimately all of the Little Roasts joined at the market and it was a true family affair. It what possibly was the last beautiful hot day before Cape Town’s winter truly set in, and in true Godfrey fashion we arrived fashionably late, dragging camping chairs, a fold out tables and of course our wares past the already set up stalls to one of the spots still available - in the glaring hot sun.

We ended up keeping some of Aiden’s ‘stock’ behind in the shade, which permanently made it look like he was “almost sold out”, a classic yet in this case unintended sales techniques. Not that Aiden needed this: after his first sale he was hooked: he loved the idea of earning some cash and would talk to potential customers looking at other stalls.

Marie Biscuit Fudge Ingredients: butter, icing sugar, cocoa powder, marie biscuits, eggs.

Ingredients to make Marie Biscuit Fudge

  • 1 packet Marie biscuits (broken not crushed)

  • 175 g butter

  • 2 cups icing sugar

  • 2 tablespoons cocoa

  • 5 ml vanilla essence (not pictured)

  • 1 large egg

How to Prepare Marie Biscuit Fudge

  1. Mix the egg and the vanilla essence in a bowl.

  2. On a low heat, melt the butter in a pot.

  3. Add the icing sugar and cocoa. Turn off the heat. Add the egg mixture.

  4. Gently add the broken biscuits.

  5. Pour into a greased dish.

  6. Allow to cool and cut into pieces.

It is a crazy time of life: running a 200 people business and struggling to keep it profitable, two small children with a third on the way, and about to move into a new house. But when Shawn gets selected to be one of the 20 contestants participating in the fourth season of MasterChef South Africa, he decides to go all in. Leaving his 7-month-pregnant wife to look after their then three and one-year-old children, he battles it out and comes back home five weeks later with the trophy and a million rand prize money in his pocket.

It all started with an Instagram account, but The Roasted Dad is so much more now. Shawn has stayed his entrepreneurial self and whilst he hosts Private Dinner Parties and Cook-with-Me Demos, does Restaurant Take-Overs, he still runs the lighting company and several other businesses.

On his blog, Shawn shares Restaurant Reviews and Accommodation Reviews, and gives an insight into the wild and wonderful life he leads together with his wife Lianne, and their three children Aiden (6), Olivia (4) and Harvey (2).
